Writers Club

Some people expressed their interest in the project I'm working on that I called the "Writers Club Web App".  So, I figure I mine as well use this blog to talk about it some more.

My inspiration for this web page comes from a group of homeschoolers that got together on Sunday nights back when I was in early highschool.  A topic was chosen for the week, and during the week we'd all write stories based on said topic.  Then every Sunday night, we'd get together and we'd read each other our stories. After each was read, we'd briefly comment on what we thought of it.

I suppose some of us took the concept more seriously than others, and I suppose I would have fit into the "others" camp back then, ha!  But whenever I look back on this activity, I tend to smile.  Yes, at first, I did it because of the games we played afterword, but I found myself really enjoying everyone's creativity. It encouraged me to try and write, an activity I would have never practiced otherwise, and I enjoyed that.

Now, with said inspiration, I began to realize I had an idea for a web page that could emulate this, and bring back some of the charm I so greatly miss from the writings of various friends from back then.

These are my ideas so far:

  • Members will have to login to participate, and logins will be given via an invite system of some sort
  • All members will be encouraged to come up with some topics to fill up a pool of topics
  • When someone wants to write, they can either choose from the pool of topics, or have the system give them a topic from that pool randomly
  • Members can view and comment on stories that will be sorted via topic / date written
  • Stories can be worked on over a period of time, they can be saved, and will not be published until a "publish" button is pressed.
That's all I have so far, so if anyone has any ideas. Go ahead and leave comments here, or on Facebook if that's desired.

Oh, and the logo on this post took less than 5 minutes.  So if you hate it, or want to add to it, PLEASE DO! I want this whole thing to be a community effort! The font is Georgia Italic, just in case you want to play with my design concept.

I think the idea looks awesome! Let me know when you've got something to test and I'd be happy to produce some content to see how it flows. It will probably be easier to say what else it needs once we start trying it out...

I know, I promised I'd work on this. But I haven't yet. For that I am terribly sorry. It's hard to do unpaid web work, knowing you should be doing the same thing to provide for your family.
